Mother’s Day Weekend at Mohonk Mountain House

On Mother’s Day (and most holidays, for that matter) I am the kind of person who really enjoys experiences instead of things as gifts. Last year we headed to the Botanical Gardens to celebrate, and this year we headed about 2 hours upstate from Long Island to the beautiful Mohonk Mountain House for the weekend. Matt had this spot saved for a while, since we’re huge fans of Upstate NY roadtrips, and we could not wait to explore the grounds, hike around the property and kick back and relax. While we were once the kind of adventurous travelers who would book different places to stay each night, and jam pack our days with back-to-back things to do, we’ve learned that it’s easier when traveling with kids to book relaxing vacations, set up for a toddlers entertainment (and some for the parents too!)

A few reasons that Mohonk was great with Hudson:

  • There were a TON of food options – We usually stress a bit about what Hudson will eat when we’re away, but they offer 3 meals a day, buffet style, with such yummy food for adults (ramen, salad bar, poke, etc etc!) but they also had so many options for Hudson, so we never felt like there was nothing for him to eat. That took such a big stress off of our shoulders!
  • We felt like there was enough for him to do, so he was entertained, but we were too. We explored the tulip gardens, walked around to the horse stables and the greenhouse on the property, hiked the easier path that we were able to bring a stroller on, and we took him into the indoor heated pool!
  • There’s a KIDS CLUB! We had never tried one of these things out, but we’re so glad we did. On Saturday morning from 9:30-12:30 Hudson got to play with other kids, and they had arts and crafts, cars, blocks and tons of other awesome toys. Matt and I were able to go for a ride on the paddle boat and get some alone time in! It was such a great perk!

THE ROOM:

We stayed on the fifth floor, and our balcony had an incredible view of the lake – we spent evenings and early mornings enjoying the view (and trying to teach Hudson not to throw things off of balconies lol)

This year was my third Mother’s Day (well my fourth if you count the year I was pregnant) and it’s funny, I almost felt like a seasoned professional. My very first Mother’s Day felt really emotional, I remember that. This year I felt emotional in a different way – I feel like my baby isn’t a baby anymore, and like time is just flying by. I really love him at this age, and find it much easier to be out and about spending time with him, and traveling with him, but I can’t help but get somewhat sad when I see mom’s wearing their babies, and realizing that will never be me with Hudson again. I know that is part of the motherhood journey – jumping into different motherly roles as your baby gets older. But it always feels bittersweet, and each step of the way I mourn the loss of the last step. This Mother’s Day was one for the books, and I feel honored to get to raise Hudson. He’s my greatest gift and joy in life.

We’re already plotting how we can make our way back to Mohonk Mountain House in the fall, when the leaves are all pretty colors! If you’re looking for a spot for a special occasion, or a place to make your yearly tradition, we LOVED our stay, and can’t wait to get back soon!
