Dying My Hair Ginger & How I Keep It Vibrant

I never really went into much detail about my big HAIR CHANGE that happened in early 2019, but I’ve had a lot of you asking about it, so I figured I’d explain more about what I asked my hairstylist for, and how I’m maintaining my new color!

I decided in early 2019 that I needed a change. I felt pigeon holed into being this blonde girl with bangs, and I wanted something fresh, although nothing too drastic! I’ve had my hair basically every color and every length, and I’ve learned that I do not like anything short on myself, and I stay away from brown hair, bright red, or anything TOO different than my normal color. I wanted my hair to feel “more warm” and I’d been loving all of the copper and ginger hues I had seen around the gram.

When I brought an inspiration picture to my hair dresser, she recommended a tint, which basically means instead of lifting the original color of my hair, she would be temporarily depositing new color on top of it. She described it as “demi-permanent” or a toner, and said I should expect it to wash out in about 4-6 weeks. The entire process cost $80 at my salon. Before she toned it, she did my usual color process, which is a balayage – I have it done about once per year to lighten my hair up a bit, and I always like it done very natural so it almost looks sun-kissed. The balayage made my hair a bit lighter, so that the tint would be more obvious and visible. After that was complete, the final step was to tint my hair, and it only took about 10-15 minutes.

All-in-all, I do wish it was a bit more vibrant, and when I go back I will probably get a bolder color. The hairdresser was a bit nervous that the color was so different from my normal blonde, so she wanted to test it on me first before we did anything too intense.

How am I keeping it so vibrant? At the salon I brought home a conditioner called Madder Root conditioner by Aveda. The conditioner is bright red, and it’s supposed to help intensify red hues. I can attest for the fact that it truly works, but you have to be very careful to brush it through evenly, and it is for sure RED so it will make your hair color much more red than orange or copper. It definitely altered the original color a bit, but I’m embracing it knowing it’s going to wash out in a few weeks.

Do you guys like the new look?
