Personal: The Struggle Between Minimalism And Consumerism

I wanted to speak candidly today about something that has been on my mind for a few months. As a blogger, it’s my job to constantly be wearing the newest things and pushing products that I love – I am always on the hunt for things to make MY life cuter, better, easier and then I love sharing that with all of you. When I started this blog, the main focus of all of my posts were my thrifting finds – how I sewed older clothing to revive them, or how I restyled pieces before I would sell them to all of you in my vintage shop. So clearly the focus of my blog has shifted as the years have gone by. But the thing is – sometimes I just love to re-wear old pieces season to season, and fall back into old favorites like the rest of you.

I asked you all in a poll if you enjoy seeing me wear all new products so I can link to them – and I was secretly hoping a lot of you would say you like seeing older pieces restyled more, but 87% of you said you prefer new pieces! EIGHTY SEVEN PERCENT! On the flip side, I’ve been seeing a lot more DM’s lately asking me about my thoughts on consumerism, and constantly pushing people to want more, or to feel like they’re missing out on things they need that are ultimately just things. Those messages always bum me out, and sit at the top of my mind on the days I receive them.

The things is, I know I can’t please everyone, especially not in this type of job. But, the person I do want to please is MYSELF, and the constant pushing of products around this time of year does get to me a little bit. I find myself glossing over as I scroll through instagram, but I also simultaneously shop through bloggers shopping guides, and use their discount codes for holiday gifts. So ultimately I am torn! I just wanted to open up this discussion, and also say that at the core of my own being, I believe that things are just things. I can tell you from where I sit, on hoards of clothing and random product because of my blog, that THINGS and MONEY do not bring you happiness, these things come from within. So while I will continue to most likely share my favorite finds, and stay up-to-date on the cutest new arrivals, because it’s something you all rely on me for, just know that these things are great, but it’s the invaluable things in your world that will keep you happy, not the products in my gift guides.

I’ve been taking this month to try to declutter my life, in all senses of the word. I’ve been trying to eat at home more, clear out my closet and donate/ sell unused items, stay off of my phone a bit more and enjoy my loved ones. I find that the things that DO bring me joy are being outside, going for walks and runs, spending time with my family, and living in a clutter-free environment. So while I take my job seriously, and am so so thankful for what I get to do for work, I also just wanted to say to take it all with a grain of salt, and to look around and be thankful for all that you’ve been given!

What are your thoughts on all of this? I always love to hear from you in the comments.
