Wallpapering My Dining Room Accent Wall

I am getting prepped to fully re-do this room, since most of the furniture was thrown together from our last house (and the bench is there because we only had 3 chairs haha), but the first step I wanted to take was to add in an accent wall. This room always felt extremely stark white to me, and it lacked a pop of color. I’ve been thinking about painting this wall for months, but finally decided on this mustard yellow wallpaper! The room will be mostly neutral, with a rug after the new furniture arrives, but I wanted to share the process of wallpapering, in case you’ve been wondering if you should do the same!

This is the wallpaper I used.

To order the correct amount of wallpaper, I measured the wall. The sheets are 2′ x 4′ panels, so you need to consider how much you’d need to cover your space, and I’d buy a bit extra just to be safe! I used 2 panels from top to bottom, and then 4 panels across, so to complete my space it took a total of 8 panels, and I was left with 2 additional just to be safe!

Tools I needed for the job were:

  • A credit card to help smooth the paper to the wall
  • An X-acto knife
  • A ruler or tape measure for a straight edge

In wallpapering, you always want to start in a corner, so I started in the upper left hand corner of the room, and worked my way down, and then over! The paper is fairly easy to apply, and is pretty similar to installing a window decal (which I used to have to do while merchandising all of the time!). You peel the back, and then slowly stick the paper as you peel. I felt on a scale of 1-10, the job was about a 4 difficulty level. The most important part is lining up the pattern, making sure the paper is straight, and cutting carefully around doorways and molding!

I hope this inspired you to add a fun accent wall in your home! I really feel like it has transformed the space!
