I think it’s a mystery to many people what blogging actually looks like – it’s such a new field, and the workflow is so different for everyone, but I wanted to share a raw and unedited version of what a day in my life looks like. Hudson is in daycare 3 days per week, so this only applies to the 3 days I am at home working without him. When he is around, I usually only get to work at his naptime, and when he goes to bed at night.
I am a creature of habit, and I really like having a routine. That was one of my favorite parts of having a 9-5 job, so once I had open ended amounts of time to focus on my blog, I created my own routine. I think it helps me to be productive, and also to have a time each week to accomplish certain pieces that need to get done. If you’re looking into freelancing, I highly suggest this. It keeps me responsible!
7-7:30AM – Wake up! As you can see, I am usually a bit sleepy and not super quick to hop out of bed. If Matt is home, he usually gets Hudson up and dressed, but if he is at work than I am quicker to rise. On this day Matt was home to shoot some campaigns, so he was the one caring for Hudson.
8:30AM – Matt and Hudson head to daycare after breakfast
8:30 – 9AM I get ready for our first shoot! It usually takes me under 30 minutes to do my hair and makeup, and pick out what to wear.
9AM: Before Matt get’s back I usually read over the campaign briefs for the jobs we’re shooting to make sure I know what our shot list is, and what we need to keep in mind while shooting. During this time I will also pack any DEPOP orders, and shoot the photo for my weekly giveaway if it’s Monday!
9:30AM – 12:30PM: We shoot! On this particular day we were shooting two jobs, one that required us to drive around and find a flower patch to shoot at, and another that we were shooting in the house. It always takes a bit of time to find the location, find the right angle for the shot, and then to shoot. In our house, like you saw in my post last week, it takes me a bit to set up for the shoot. On this day it took us a few hours to shoot everything!
12:30 – 2:30PM: Select and edit photos from the morning shoots, and e-mail them to the brand for approvals. I also usually write the copy and add the post to my content calendar at this time! After that, I generally answer my e-mails for the day!
2:30 PM – 3PM: Sweep and clean up our side yard a bit to get ready for a BBQ we’re hosting tomorrow, and snap an image for a “Before” photo for a West Elm renovation I am starting to plan for!
3 – 4PM: List items on DEPOP from my office! This is the little corner I use to shoot the photos in!
4 – 4:30PM: Write this blog post!
4:30-5:15PM: Work out at the gym
5:30PM: Pick up Hudson!
There you have it, a full day in the life of a blogger. Of course every day is a bit different depending on the shoot and how involved it is – some days it takes most of the day to go shoot if we have to drive to a specific location, and other days we don’t have any campaigns to shoot so we just shoot in the moment as we run errands! It is varied, but is usually somewhat similar to the outline of this day!
