Our A-Frame Room Before + After!

When we bought our home, I knew right away that this A-frame attic had to be converted into a room. I’ve always dreamt of having an A-frame room in my home, I just didn’t realize HOW LONG it would take to make it happen! It was way more work than I envisioned, but in the end I am so so glad that we took the time to convert this unused space into a room. We are using it as a playroom for Hudson for now, and if we ever expand our family our plan is to fully move Hudson into this room. It’s a perfect size – not too big but not too small, and it looks out on my favorite street in the neighborhood.

In order to finish off the room, we first had to rip out all of the old insulation. We then had to re-frame some of the studs, have electrical outlets put in, sheetrock the entire space, paint it, and then pick out and install wood flooring and molding. It took about seven months from beginning to end, because with vacations and holidays, and just feeling generally burnt out on home projects we kept stalling on various steps.

For the final step, the flooring, I initially thought I would paint over the existing wood in white, and go for that rustic barn look. I soon found out the existing wood floor was actually the subfloor, and I needed to put down new flooring. I ended up using Lumber Liquidators, and they did a great job installing everything quickly! We went with a Natural Hickory engineered hardwood, and I love the different tones in the flooring!

BEFORE:

When designing Hudson’s playroom, I had two things in mind – 1. The space had to have an “adult” area where Matt and I can hangout, or a friend can sleepover in, and 2. That it would have tons of toys for Hudson to play with, but all stored in an organized fashion. I fell in love with this Eliot Twin Sleeper, because its a gorgeous color, but also pulls out into a bed. I had it in my mind that all sleeper sofas are hideous, but clearly that is not the case! It’s also the perfect size for a smaller room like this one. I added the jute rug, along with this cute orange puff and pillow to warm up the space a bit.

The next big purchase for the room was this mid-century bookcase. I loved all of the different cubbies, and how I could compartmentalize Hudson’s toys in an organized way. It also fits perfectly under the window! I knew I wanted to keep the space somewhat neutral since his toys are so bright and colorful, and I loved all of the options at IKEA! I ended up adding the IKEA kitchen set, table and chairs set and home shaped shelf to the space!

I think the greatest part of the space is that the bones of it are in place (a couch, a rug, storage space) but the toys themselves can shift as he grows, and they can stay age appropriate. Right now he is on the move so he loves his toy cars, and playing pretend in his kitchen, but I imagine in the next few months we get an easel in here for painting, and this becomes our space to get dirty and work on fun projects.

I am excited to share the space as it evolves, and I will make sure to link all of the items in the room below!
